Listen and be heard to mobilize: soundscapes for ecosystem protection in a mining region in Arizona (USA)

Soundscapes are emerging today as a tool to inform socio-environmental changes in rapidly changing territories and can feed mobilization projects at the local scale. Our research project Sonatas (Listening to the SOunds of NAture to undersTAnd global environmental changeS - funded by the LabEx Driihm) aims to understand how local communities hear, respond and adapt to changes in their territories in Southern Arizona. These territories are subject to multiple sociological and environmental changes, such as global warming, water scarcity, uncontrolled urbanization, and important mining projects with heavy environmental consequences. Through acoustic recordings of soundscapes conducted near existing mining sites, we document the impacts of urbanization and mining operations on ecosystems and biodiversity. The mining territories are places of strong mobilizations of the local communities which divide the inhabitants and causes many tensions, between those who want to exploit and survive economically and those who favor the preservation of the environment. We met with citizens during dedicated interviews or participant observations in order to understand their perceptions (auditory but not only) of the changes and to understand the multiple actions carried out collectively to accompany or face them. Some citizens are organizing themselves to try to minimize the impact of extractions on the environment, creating more or less institutionalized groups, promoting protection measures on the territories or collective purchasing land to stop its progression. Through Sonatas, we wish to show how, in these situations, soundscapes can be a tool for action at a local scale.
Les paysages sonores apparaissent aujourd'hui comme un outil d'information sur les changements socio-environnementaux dans des territoires en pleine mutation et peuvent alimenter des projets de mobilisation à l'échelle locale. Notre projet de recherche Sonatas (Listening to the SOunds of NAture to undersTAnd global environmental changeS - financé par le LabEx Driihm) vise à comprendre comment les communautés locales entendent, répondent et s'adaptent aux changements de leurs territoires dans le sud de l'Arizona. Ces territoires sont soumis à de multiples changements socio-environnementaux, tels que le réchauffement climatique, la raréfaction de l'eau, l'urbanisation incontrôlée et d'importants projets miniers aux lourdes conséquences environnementales. A travers des enregistrements acoustiques de paysages sonores réalisés à proximité de sites miniers existants, nous documentons les impacts de l'urbanisation et des opérations minières sur les écosystèmes et la biodiversité. Les territoires miniers sont des lieux de fortes mobilisations des communautés locales qui divisent les habitants et provoquent de nombreuses tensions, entre ceux qui veulent exploiter et survivre économiquement et ceux qui favorisent la préservation de l'environnement. Nous avons rencontré des citoyens lors d'entretiens dédiés ou d'observations participantes afin de comprendre leurs perceptions (auditives mais pas seulement) des changements et de comprendre les multiples actions menées collectivement pour les accompagner ou y faire face. Certains citoyens s'organisent pour tenter de minimiser l'impact des extractions sur l'environnement, en créant des groupes plus ou moins institutionnalisés, en promouvant des mesures de protection sur les territoires ou en achetant collectivement des terres pour stopper leur progression. A travers Sonatas, nous souhaitons montrer comment, dans ces situations, les paysages sonores peuvent être un outil d'action à l'échelle locale.
