Les nouvelles frontières de la géothermie profonde : dépasser l’acceptabilité sociale pour aller vers une analyse systémique

The new frontiers of deep geothermal energy: beyond social acceptability towards systemic analysis
The aim of this presentation is to expose the conceptual framework used in research work presenting the issue of the territorialization of deep geothermal energy, based on French and Swiss case studies. Indeed, deep geothermal energy carries the promise of an energy presented as “endless”, and would thus be a technology of choice in a context of energy transition. To meet these promises, geothermal energy will follow a process of expansion outside its “historical regions”, particularly in the Paris Basin in France, where it has developed since the 1980’s. This will involve the construction of technical and economic models, particularly through the implementation of industrial demonstrators, as well as the reuse of former oil wells. Nevertheless, the arrival of geothermal energy in new territories generates a certain number of specific technical, economic and social constraints, which de facto require a socio-technical adaptation.
In order to study the responses to these constraints, and to see how geothermal energy "lands" on these territories, several concepts were mobilized. First of all, a political geography approach was adopted. This theoretical framework was amended by integrating the sociotechnical dimension, by mobilizing the Actor-Network Theory, with the sociotechnical construction of artefacts. The dimension of the Actor-Network Theory thus makes it possible to integrate the question of technological controversies. Finally, the question of social acceptability was examined.
Cette communication a pour but de présenter le cadre conceptuel utilisé dans un travail de recherche présentant la question de la territorialisation de la géothermie profonde, en se basant sur des cas d’études français et suisses. En effet, la géothermie profonde porte la promesse d’une énergie présentée comme « inépuisable », et serait ainsi une technologie de choix dans un contexte de transition énergétique. Pour répondre à ces promesses, la géothermie va suivre un processus d’extension en dehors de ses « régions historiques », notamment dans le bassin parisien en France où elle s’est développée depuis les années 1980. Cela passe par la construction de modèles technico-économiques, notamment à travers la mise en place de démonstrateurs industriels, ainsi que la réutilisation d’anciens puits pétroliers. Néanmoins, l’arrivée de la géothermie sur de nouveaux territoires engendre un certain nombre de contraintes techniques, économiques et sociales spécifiques, engendrant de facto une adaptation sociotechnique.
Afin d’étudier les réponses à ces contraintes, et voir comment « atterrit » la géothermie sur ces territoires, plusieurs concepts ont été mobilisés. Tout d’abord, il a été adopté une approche de géographie politique. Ce cadre théorique a été amendé en intégrant la dimension sociotechnique, en mobilisant la sociologie de la traduction, avec la construction sociotechnique d’artefacts. La dimension de la sociologie de la traduction permet ainsi d’intégrer la question des controverses technologiques. Finalement, il a été interrogé la question de l’acceptabilité sociale.
