Le tumulus Irau 4

Abstract : This mound of Stones, excavated in 1988, measures 5.5 m. in diameter and 0.50m. in height. It consists of stone blocks piled up without any order whatsoever. In the centre a mal1 cist, comprising 12 slabs set upright, delimits an irregular enclosed space measuring 0.60 m. by 0.50 m. It contained no objects or charcoal. A few carbonised particles found to the SE of the cist have been dated to 3850 ± 90, wich, when calibrated. gives Cal. BC: (-2057,-2560). This poses the problem of the appearance of cremation rites under tumuli in the Pays Basque in the Chalcolithic period.
