Le cercle de pierres de Sohandi II

Abstract : The stone circle of Sohandi II, excavated in July 1984, comprises crude blocks of conglomerate surrounding a very primitive central structure. It differs from the protohistoric circles excavated previously in its careless construction and the complete absence of charcoal in its centre. These features show similarity with the neighbouring circles (Sohandi IV, V and VI) and, in a more general way, with the other monuments dated to the historic period. The presence of two weapons (I spearhead and I javelin-head) in use between de XI th and the XIV th centuries A. C., as well as that of a horseshoe fragment, confirm this probability. A few sparse particles of wood charcoal , found under one of the stones of the peristalit, have been dated by 14 to 2680 ± 80 i.e. 730 ± 80 BC. This figure, given its ar-caeological context, would not seem ta cast doubt on our opinion of a far younger age for the monument itself.
