Emilie Guyard

Résumé

Abstract: Fantastic fiction is a genre where characters evolve in a world that seems to mirror the reader’s life experience but where uncanny events occur that come to disrupt the established order. By that token alone, Carlos Salem’s two romans noirs, Camino de ida and Un Jamon calibre 45 do belong to the genre of the fantastic. However, in Salem’s fiction, contrary to what happens in most canonical fantastic novels, the poetically-charged events encountered by the characters do not generate fear but are registered and taken in as non-disruptive elements, which might suggest that they stand outside the realm of the fantastic genre itself. Nevertheless, further investigation into textual genericity as explored by recent critics such as Jean-Michel Adam reveals that a text’s relation to its genre is not necessarily a binary one determined by inclusion or exclusion but may instead be described in terms of partial belonging. The aim of this article is therefore both to demonstrate how the fiction of Argentinian-born Carlos Salem qualifies as belonging to the fantastic sphere as thus redefined and to show how, in this instance, the fantastic component to be found in his narratives is a major feature of his literary stance as an outside observer of contemporary Spain.
