Adolfo Bioy Casares, Silvina Ocampo y Jorge Luis Borges Una colaboración inédita y anecdótica

Abstract : In 1939, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Silvina Ocampo and Jorge Luis Borges, indivisible friends since they first met some years earlier, plan together the plot of a short story. This manuscript came to us through an incomplete editing after years of neglectfulness. Unique experience of collaborative writing of the famous “infernal trio” (except their later and successful common work as anthologists), this plural and unfinished short story has been mentioned and reproduced for the first time by Adolfo Bioy Casares in “Lettres et amitié” (“Letras y Amistad”), an autobiographical article, published in French, in 1964, in the special issue Jorge Luis Borges of the Cahier de l’Herne journal. According to Bioy, this original three pages piece, entitled “En littérature, il faut éviter” (“En literature, hay que evitar”), had to relate to the investigation of an unpublished work by an unknown, dead writer. Despite its exceptional peculiarity, this has been completely ignored by criticism, and probably because of the will of its three disdainful authors. This piece was born at the time of the creation of some of the most original and famous characters of the Argentinean and worldwide literary history, such as Honorio Bustos Domecq and Pierre Ménard. It questions the absence or the marginalization of collaborative writing within literature and allows a better consideration as well as a transcendence of this kind of writing within the modern literature of the XXth century.
