Marine particle size measurement with a stream-scanning laser system

Résumé

During the ecofer II cruise in May 1990 in the Bay of Biscay more than 60 water samples were taken from different water depths and were analyzed on board for the grain-size distribution of the suspended matter. Two different instruments were used for this purpose: (1) the Galai CIS 1 laser system, which is based on a rotating He-Ne laser, whose time to pass over a particle is related to the particle diameter, and (2) a modified Coulter Counter, the measurement principle of which is based on electro-resistivity in an electrolyte. Various experiments were carried out with the laser system in order to determine the practically of the apparatus. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages are discusssed and compared with the classical Coulter Counter system. © 1992.
