Résumé
The Convention of Republican Institutions, founded in 1963 around François Mitterrand, was central to the reshaping of French socialism until its dissolution in 1971. Considered as a think tank, the movement changed after the 1965 presidential election into a political party devoted to its leader within the framework of the Fédération des gauches démocrates et socialistes (FGDS) (Federation of democratic and socialist left parties). Its failure following the events of May 1968 moved the Convention of Republican Institution to the left where it argued for a united socialist left, preparatory to a wider union of the left with the Communist party in an attempt to return to power. Although the convention members were few and marginalized, they managed to gain importance in the unification process and conquer the Socialist party apparatus during the Congress of Socialist Unity in Épinay.
La Convention des institutions républicaines (CIR), fondée en 1963 autour de François Mitterrand, se place jusqu’à sa dissolution en 1971 au centre du processus de recomposition du socialisme français. Considéré comme un club producteur d’idées, le mouvement se transforme au lendemain de l’élection présidentielle de 1965 en parti politique au service de son leader, dans le cadre de la Fédération des gauches démocrates et socialistes (FGDS). L’échec de cette dernière après les événements de Mai 68 conduit la Convention des institutions républicaines à orienter son discours plus à gauche, et à plaider pour une unité des gauches socialistes, préalable à une union plus large de la gauche avec le parti communiste en vue de la reconquête du pouvoir. Bien que marginalisés et peu importants d’un point de vue quantitatif, les conventionnels parviennent à s’imposer dans le processus unitaire et à conquérir l’appareil du parti socialiste lors du congrès de l’unité socialiste à Épinay.
