VARIATIONS DE L’ÉCRITURE ET DIVERSITÉ TYPOLOGIQUE : L’APPROCHE DU VOCABLE CHEZ GUSTAVE GUILLAUME À LA LUMIÈRE DE SA THÉORIE DES INTÉGRALES CONSTITUTIVES DU LANGAGE

Gustave Guillaume’s thinking about writing was already dealt with in one of F. Tollis’s former articles in 1997. It was then shown that, far from considering it secondary like most of his contemporaries, Guillaume underlined its privileged relations with thought processes together with the part it played in the linguistic structuration of languages. He enhanced both how deep-rooted it was and how relevant a testimony it was. Now that ten more volumes of his writing have been published – both from his early and late periods –, it might be of interest to reconsider this topic. It appears that, most particularly in 1941-1942, Guillaume drew an apparently original parallel between writing and the different integrals that he thought possible to trace within the architecture of the various types of speech and behind the various types of items they are made up of. It is this double theorizing approach that will be presented and analyzed here.

Les réflexions de Gustave Guillaume sur l’écriture avaient déjà fait l’objet d'une présentation de notre part en 1997. On avait alors pu voir que, loin de la cantonner dans un rôle subalterne comme bon nombre de ses contemporains, il a au contraire souligné ses liens privilégiés avec la pensée ainsi que son rôle dans la structuration linguistique des idiomes, et dégagé la profondeur de son enracinement comme la portée de son témoignage. Dix volumes supplémentaires de ses écrits étant parus depuis, précoces ou tardifs, il a paru intéressant de revenir sur le sujet. On y voit que, tout spécialement au cours des années 1941-1942, Guillaume a établi un parallèle en apparence original entre l’écriture et les différentes intégrales qu’il croit possible de repérer dans l’architecture des divers types de parlers et sous les différentes sortes de vocable dont il se sont dotés. C’est cette approche doublement théorisante qui sera dévoilée et exposée ici.
